Morning musings

Awakenings

i

They giggle in bed
loud, joyous rough and tumble
breakfast is ignored

ii

Arms and legs
big and little
I slip
from their grasp
and face
the morning

iii

The game console pings
attracting children like moths
I stretch - bed's all mine

Poem - Day 15

Do I?

My brother is
and I rejoice,
but puzzle at
the brouhaha

My sister said
she might not wait
another year
past 39

My other sister
wanted to
but couldn’t in
our sunburnt land

My son observed
you don’t have to
just fall in love
like mum and dad

My parents’
lasted 26
but now they aren’t
on speaking terms

My book revealed
at 40-odd
Miss Potter did
for 30 years

I resolved
if we survive
three decades
maybe
we should
too

ABCD... a litany of complaints

The challenge for last Saturday was an Abcdedarian - a poem in which each line starts with a consecutive letter of the alphabet. I found this really hard - and the results are very silly (as you can see) and I totally cheated with Z. My four-year-old son cried because 'it was yucky' but reassured me that he liked my other poems. Anyway - here it is.

In the wars

Achy head and
blistered toes
chapped dry lips
drip-dripping nose
earhole wax and
flaky skin
gooey eyes that
hair got in
itchy fingers
jammed in doors
knocking knees
large weeping sores
mozzie bites, a
nasty flu
oozing boils and
pimples too
quaking shivers
rectal worms
salmonella
tightrope burns
ulcers bursting
viral chills
wretched fractures
x-ray bills

You think my health is triple-cursed? Try
zymase poisoning, it's the worst

Month of poetry - not for the kids

In January I am writing a poem a day as part of a fabulous month of poetry co-ordinated by Kathryn Apel. The posts need to be family friendly, and some of mine haven't turned out that way - so I thought I'd post here, with the warning that some of them might upset the little ones, or require some explanation (which is important, but nice to be prepared).

Here's the first - an erasure poem from the new words page of the Australian Oxford Dictionary (2004 ed.)
